| Description: | Perform routine administrative tasks for the animal colony and surgical research areas. Performs animal care and other departmental functions as necessary. Duties may also include assistance with large and small animal surgeries and/or post-operative care.
Will require rotation of weekend and holiday hours. |
| Duties: | Keeps the Director informed of current status, changes, requests, etc. involving the animal facility.
Assists departmental research personnel with research projects involving animals.
Checks availability of animals and space, arranges for receipt and housing.
Records data to track animal receipt, census, clinical observations, etc.
Coordinates with investigators for specific research needs for their animals.
Assists as needed with preparing animals for surgery and/or maintaining animals during surgical procedures.
Performs routine administrative tasks relevant to management of the animal colony and surgical areas:
-Oversees and tracks the ordering of all routine supplies for animal colony, including feed, bedding, cleaning equipment and supplies, laundry, small equipment, etc.
-Checks stock and places orders as needed all common supplies for the surgical areas.
Responsible for routine quality control checks and maintenance of common surgical equipment; arranges for replacement parts and/or service for these items.
Performs daily care of animals in the facility, including cage changing, cage washing, disinfecting of animal runs, feeding, housing, etc., in accordance with current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Maintains and tracks usage of surgical suites in the large animal facility.
Oversees facility security.
Writes animal care SOP�s and updates as necessary to keep them current

| Qualifications: | Must meet the eligibility requirements for a Laboratory Animal Technologist, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), which includes one of the following:
-A high school diploma or GED, plus 5 years work experience in a laboratory animal facility;
-Any two year AA/AS degree, plus 4.5 years experience in a laboratory animal facility;
-Any four year BA/BS or higher degree, plus 4 years experience in a laboratory animal facility, or
-Laboratory Animal (LAT) certification, plus one additional year experience after receiving LAT certification.
Employee must have taken and passed the AALAS certification at the LATg level, and maintain continuing education credits as needed to maintain registered status; or, must pass the certification within 12 months.
Requires interaction with a diverse population. Ability to read, write, and comprehend standard operating procedures, work independently, complete tasks in a timely manner with lack of mistakes, and adhere to institutional safety protocols. Computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases are required. Demonstrate high standards of attendance, punctuality, maintains confidentiality, and manages time effectively. Possesses a good working knowledge of laboratory animal regulations.
